Emerald....the stone that seems to live and breathe on it's own. Is it any wonder that the Irish believe that the entire country of Ireland rests over a heart of emerald crystals? And it is that heart which loans it's color to the green of Eire's landscape. Look into it's depths, watch the colors shift....it's like watching the life force pulse within. From deep forest to a green as bright as new leaves, each hue burns with an inner fire that cannot be ignored. The emerald is the birthstone for May: vibrant, prized, symbol of immortality. Native tribes of Columbia created facial paint from ground emeralds, believing they would not be killed. Most emeralds are decorated with inclusions like gas or liquid bubbles, healing cracks, and foreign crystals. These inclusions are not necessarily considered faults, but rather add a character to the stone known as the jardin, or garden. Indeed, the lovely patterns do resemble garden foliage.

In ancient Egypt, emeralds were mined close to the Red Sea. This tranquil green gem was highly prized by the wealthy and the priest craft. The high cost made it far beyond the average Egyptian's pocketbook.

It's said that Isis wore a green emerald—all who looked upon it were guaranteed a safe trip through the land of the dead.

Emeralds have long been cherished for their beauty and supposed healing properties. Pliny believed emeralds were the only gemstones which delighted the eye without fatiguing it. He said gazing at emeralds restored his eyes. The Roman Emperor Nero wore emerald sunglasses to view the gladiators in his Circus.

In folklore, emeralds were believed to remedy poor eyesight, increase intelligence and eloquence, and cure infertility. They were also considered useful in divining the future. Although the Sister who shares the stone's name does not claim to be able to divine the future, if you find yourself wrapped up in her own unique inner fire and she is sure to change YOURS. So step into this jardin and lose yourself in the life force, and feel the pulse that is our own one of a kind Emerald.
